Trying to bleed the fuel system on our SII with a 2.5 Diesel

I'm having a problem bleeding the fuel system on our Landie. I've replaced all the pipework on the fuel system & can bleed all the air our & the engine will start fine and run for a couple of minutes. After that it starts to tickover erratically & eventually cuts out. It won't then re-start until I've bled the system. When we car the Landie there was a one-way valve on the pipe that return the fuel from the filter to the tank. This started leaking & had to be removed for the MOT. I've moved the fuel filter from the wing (there the spill pipe connection was below the spill pipes) to the bulkhead where all the connections are now above the level of the spill pipes.

One thought I've had is - does anybody know if there is a difference in the tank return (ie the lenght of the pipe inside the tank) between a SII tank & a Defender tank (the engine's come from a Sherpa van & is apparently a Land Rover engine). Anything else I can check?

Any help would be greatfully received

Cheers

Pressurisation in the fuel tank? Try running it with the fuel filler cap off and see if it runs any longer..........

It could be an air leak, I had a similar problem after draining the sedimenter and not getting a good seal on the drain plug. Air was sucked into the system eventually causing very rough running and finally stopping. Strangely there was little sign of diesel dripping from the drain plug.

Why did you replace the pipework in the first place? Check all the connections/filter bowl seal etc, sounds like it's drawing air in somewhere.

Thanks to you all - I'm back off to the garage - I'll let you know how I get on.

Hello,

Please keep up posted, I have a very similar problem where I can see after warm up air getting into the system (small piece of clear fuel hose between the filter and the main pump) but I can't find where (again, have replaced the fuel hoses). Am borderline putting it into the local specialists to sort it out!

Ta,

Nick
