Way OT - digital camcorders

Fair summary, though if you have Phono outs or S Video out you should be ok though it won't do all the auto wind the camera forward and back from the puter stuff.

I've just used it to do our Lapland trip from a digital cam corder to DVD, nice and easy.

I'd have thought the whole idea behind having a digital camcorder is being able to transfer a raw digital file to a computer without loss of quality. With one of those dazzle things you'll be going through a digital to analogue, then from analogue back to digital again!

I must get meself a digital camcorder.. Firewire has a subset protocol for transferring digital video files, no need to worry about level correction, distortion, cueing up etc..

The Dazzle thing is completely unnecessary - just put a firewire cable in and hook up to some decent software. I don't know what Pinnacle DV costs these days, but it's miles better than the XP freebie (although that's perfectly fine if you only want to dump the tape onto a DVD).
