What to say to a potential first time Owner?

My brother-in-law wants a Landrover 90 or 110 as his 'car' - he currently uses his works Transit. He says he has always admired mine. He drove it briefly over a field when we went camping 12 months ago and I could see the grin I imagine I had when I drove my first Series Landrover! He phoned me today, and I pointed him to a couple of websites to give him an idea of price ( he has a rough idea so won't be too shocked! ). The thing is, you hear all these horror stories of bad landrovers; I should tell him, but I don't want to scare him off what could be the best choice of vehicle he could ever own. Personally the three I've owned have been fantastic! General wear and tear and annual servicing being the only cost to me...oh, the last MOT was a bit of a shock but its done now and it'll last at least another 11 years! I have an old Landrover magazine about buying a second hand 90 and what to look for. Basically I want him to get one, but don't want him to get a lemon and then regret it and never get another! As I type this, I'm beginning to realise that every make of car can have it's dogs...and its stunning, reliable motors. Now I'm wondering why I even bothered typing this....ho hum!

help and advise him as best you can. I have a 1984 110 csw as my everyday car and I love it.

You have to be mad, but if you go for a pre defender landie, there is in my opinion no such thing as a bad land rover, only one that needs work on it.

same seems to apply to 90/110/defender as well, mind.

you can get all the bits, in fact, bits for 90/110 are easier than series bits, in some cases, now.

some early series stuff is getting thin on the ground - I once had a leaky water pump on a 1961 SII, and being as it was the early pattern 2.1/4 pump, it wasn't available. and that was over 10 years ago. Blimey!

I'm lending Ade, the brother-in-law, my Landy today (please be gentle with her!) for a short journey from my house to his - about 15 miles over dual carriageway and B roads so he can get a bit more of a feel for it. I will be following in his Transit...and watching very carefully! Yesterday I decided to tell him about the possible pitfalls and he just said what I was thinking - "You can get that with any make of car!". I told him how readily parts were available, there's a Landranger 5 minutes walk from my house. I gave him a few LRO Magazines and he seems undeterred! Hooray! I'll keep you posted if anyone's interested, and try to get him on this group.

You should take him to a Land Rover Show.

Yeah, I'm trying to organise a trip to Billing - if I'm not working. Maybe he could come along... Shows are awesome for people with even a slight interest in Landys. Good idea.
