1 year Major Maintenance for 2004 Lexus LX 470

Hi all, I have an issue I was hoping you all could help me with. I had a 1990 Lexus 400 that I always took to a mechanic that used to be a mechanic in the Lexus dealership. He has always been great, uses only Lexus parts, and is much more reasonably priced. However, after having my Lexus for 14 years, I decided to give it to my inlaws (it still runs great) and buy myself an 2004 Lexus LX470. At the first

15K miles I took I called the dealership and the Major maintenance was $450. I called this mechanic and it was $229 with him and it included all the same exact things, so I took it in. Now, it's just not running the same, it seems to hiccup and after I break hard and hit the accelerator again. I took it back and he said the problem was that he had to reset the computer and it's always an issue with all the newer cars. I tweaked the computer again, it's better, but not the same. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and take it into the dealer. What would you tell the dealer? Thing is, I really don't think they need to do an ENTIRE major maintenance, just check the computer thing. Your thoughts??

Thanks,

Carlos

If the problem is subtle, then the computer reset diagnosis is sound. I'd drive it a while longer - it will probably settle out.

If the problem is severe, I doubt a computer reset would cause this. I'd take it to the dealer now. It could be a totally unrelated problem. You don't need to have them do any maintenance; just tell them of the symptoms and have them find out what is wrong. I wouldn't bring it up that you had the checkup done elsewhere, but there is no reason to hide it either - you're free to have the maintenance checks done at any competent shop.

It's still under warranty - use it.
