Gen 1 LS400 ignition coils lifetime

We've had our '92 LS400 since it was two years old. Very reliable car. Last year one of the two ignition coils went out. Since the other one was just as old, I suggested to the (independent) tech. that maybe it would be wise to replace the other one, too. He consulted with the Lexus parts counter guy who told him that they seldom go out in pairs. The other one may last another decade. So, only one was replaced.

Last week the fuel pump went out and I had the same shop fix it. They fixed it promptly and just as they were pulling out of the garage bay, the computer threw a code. The code said the other coil was failing.

Sigh.

Short moral is that if you lose one coil, you might as well change the other at the same time.

The total cost for the two coils plus the fuel pump will be about $1,000.

Double sigh.

No, no I don't believe it is. I maintain my mother's. Though I've not had those replaced, from what has been done was astonishing! It's why I bought an rx330 for my wife and it was so nice I bought a rx350 for myself a few months later.
