Can anyone have an opinion of the relative merits of a Lexus ES330 vs an Acrua TL?

It is simple. Drive them both and you will know the answer. Plus, look at the maintenance and ultimate operating cost.

I have the ES330 and I do love it, but I would look at the TL if I were to do it again. I think the TL is just more sporty than the ES... and I kind of miss that...
