Wiring brake controller for RX400h - towing

Jun 24, 2008 2 Replies

Having a hard time finding parts and info to install a receiver and brake controller on my 2008 RX400h. Lexus website says tow capacity is 3500#. In US, most states require brakes on trailer if over 3000#. Therefore it is necessary to install some kind of brake controller. Lexus dealer here is useless and won't touch it. Place that will install receiver doesn't want to touch the electricity. Help.

You can get online access to the factory repair manuals and wiring diagrams for $10/day at techinfo.toyota.com. The factory information will not tell you how to install a brake controller, but the instructions for the brake controller should tell you which wires to tap into, and you can identify the correct wires with the factory wiring diagram.

If you are towing a camp or boat trailer 1500 lbs or more, they will usually have a surge brake built in and you won't need a brake controller. If you are towing something big enough to need a separate electric brake system, it's probably over the 3500 lbs your vehicle can handle anyway and a controller becomes a moot point.
