1987 accord steering gaiter

My car just failed the MOT on this, ( and a bit of welding and a tyre :0( ) Is it easy / DIY'able ? This isn't too bad for a 17yr old car I guess.

If it's like most steering gaiters you seperate the balljoint taper (for which a scissor type balljoint seperator is ideal) and unscrew the balljoint from the end of the trackrod. Then you pull off the old gaiter, clean out any dirt fit the new one with suitable grease, swearing mightily 'cos it's slippery and keeps wandering off, then refit the trackrod end and refit the taper joint.

If you're clever you can mark the trackrod or count the turns so you know where to put it back to so you don't have to get the tracking done at the end.

In the steering rack or on the track rod end's thread?

inside the boot, on the rack the guy in the shop said it didn't need anything. but the reason for repacing it is that the greese is leaking out. The powersteering fluid does not leak . Simon

Yes - whatever the manual says you need. Racks must be lubricated, usually a semifluid grease. If you've lost some then personally I'd replace it with some more.

What would the trade name be for these?

Oh gawd - now I've got to go look!

Right - my Metro manual says Duckhams Adgear OO, the Clio manual says Molycote33 medium, and I CBA to find any more!

Isn't LM the light brown stuff? I thought Moly/MS3 was the dark grey stuff.

The SD1 manual mentions BP Energrease FLG for one make of rack - but just grease for the others. Tried my local (large) motor factors and drew a blank.

For non-PAS racks I've always ended up using CVJ grease - those little sachets of gloopy molygrease.

Last non PS rack I had used oil, IIRC. A ZA Magnette.

ok, enough already :)

I'm gonna' use LM greese 'cos thats what he said.

If it's brown it's brown !

Thanks
