2.5tdi Shogun blowing white smoke and overheating???

Hi Just got back from a 3 hour wait on the M6 to be recovered after my 2.5 shogun (J Reg) overheated and blew the radiator top hose. The engine had also just started to blow white smoke on overrun and tickover but LOADS of it on the same run.

I've already replaced the hose and the car still starts and runs but runs very rough on tickover and is difficult to start. It's still smoking although not as bad and if I remove the radiator cap, the radiator 'chuffs' at the same rate as the engine tickover. My guess is head gasket but I'd like to confirm before taking it apart! The oil isn't milky and when it overheated, it appeared to be steaming from somewhere under the expansion tank aswell.

If it comes to it, does anyone know of an online "How to" for head removal on these engines? I'm no stranger to mechanics but a total stranger to both diesels and these engines! Any help is much appreciated! Thanks Paul

I think you're right with the head gasket option. I'd say you had a breech between a cylinder and the water jacket.

My 1st car did this, right up to the point water started pouring out of the air intake!

Sound like a head gasket but when mine went not quite so dramatically it turned out to be a cracked cylinder head so may be worth getting this pressure tested. IIRC the head needs to be skimmed anyway.

The job is not difficult as they engine is fairly basic

Probably worth doing the timing and balance belts and tensioner whilst you are at it. The timing marks are clear. Don't think there is a haynes for the model but Mitsubishi used to do an owners repair manual isbn 0-907779-03-4 By Peter Russek. not brilliant but better than nothing

Once mine was apart I found that one of the pistons was cracked so I ended up putting in a recon block as well

The car had done 200K often towing a caravan but apparently they are not the strongest of engines
