3 cylinder omega

Hi



My 2.0l 16v ecotec Omega has started running on 3 cylinders and has a loud "big end" knock when trying to rev the engine. Cylinder 4 is the one not running, I have tried a new plug but this makes no difference. The plug does spark if connected to the lead out of the head. The engine does not really have the power to move the car and it makes such a horrible noise that I cannot drive it anyway. I do not think that an engine running on three cylinders should have a loud knock, what else could it be? Sticking valve? The knock started when my wife had driven about 8 miles on A roads. I have checked cam timing and this is still good.

Broken valve spring ? >winces< hope it isn't though.

I think the camshaft (or rocker shaft/rocker/follower) has broken or the conrod/piston assembly for that cylinder has come apart. Firstly I would remove the top cover and look at the valve gear. I don't know the engine but hopefully it's OHC so you'll be able to see everything.

You could also look down the spark plug hole for a look, and remove the sump to check the bottom end.

Might not be anything so drastic, of course, but without seeing it that's all I can think of.

Sounds terminal I'm afriad- piston broken up or something. You could remove the valve cover to check this end though, but with the noise you say its making definately sounds like bottom end problems.

HT Leads swapped around on distributor cap? Spark occurring at wrong time?

Thanks for all your replys, had the head off this afternoon, head gasket had gone between cylinders 3 and 4.
