98 Escort Tyre wear and brakes

I have a 98 R reg Escort 1.6 with a couple of problems. Firstly the fornt brakes were changed in the summer, at the time one of the pads on the passenger side was worn down to the metal plate while the other 3 still had loads of lining left on them, it now looks like it's done it again as there is a grinding noise coming from the front passenger side wheel when i brake.

Is it most likely to be a sticking caliper causing this or something else?

Secondly both front tyres are worn totally on the inside edge, these have been on less than a year. The steering wheel is not centralised and the car drifts to the right if i centre the wheel, it still does this despite me having the car tracked twice. Both wishbones were replaced just over a year ago as the bushes had worn so i don't think it's that, also, last time it was tracked it was the passenger side rear whel that had totally worn with the front being fine, the back is now as new while both front wheels have worn.

To say this is annoying in an understement and it seems to be costing me a fortune in tyres. I'd like to have some ideas of what it could be when i take it to the garage again as they usually seem cluless so any suggestions are very welcome

Lastly, i understand the MPG for this car should be around 35, i don;t seem to be getting near that, oxygen sensor has just been replaced as it was bent after a front end smash last year but it doesn't seem to have made much difference, could it be due to sticking barkes maybe? Mileage wise the engine has done just over 98,000. Sorry for the long post.

No, they all do that. We only ever used to check the LH pads on a service as they *always* wear first. By all means check the calipers for sticking, it does no harm, but don't be worried if you don't find anything wrong.

Sounds like you just need to get somebody competent to check the geometry.

*DING* see above fault!!!

You need to check basics really, plugs, air filter, leads, oil quality etc. These also suffer with throttle sensor faults too, which could cause overfuelling.

It sounds very much like your car needs to be presented to somebody competent for a thorough check over, there could be so many faults that are likely to cause your symptoms. It could be money well spent.

If you've had a front end smash then there is no telling what the suspension geometry is like mow. Was it repaired by someone competent? If the geometry is not right it will cause excessive tyre wear and the force required to wear the tyres will result in higher fuel consumption. Getting the geometry sorted may cure all your problems - except maybe the unequal brake pad wear.

The smash was just over a year ago and was properly reapired, i'm actually surprised they didn't write it off considering the damage done, i did however have a low speed shunt about 3 months after getting it back on the passenger side so i suppose this could have thrown the geometry out.

Def off to get some new tyres this weekend as there is no tread whatsover on the inside edges of both the front ones.

What do people think it'll likely cost to get the geometry and the car as a whole checked out and out right? I'm a bit short of money with it just being after christmas and i don;t really want to spend hundreds seeing how the car is probably not worth more than £1500.
