But the OP wants to sell a petrol car and buy a s**te old diesel as a stop-gap. Doesn't add up to me.

Ok, I skimmed the original post and missed that. I assumed he had to buy a car anyway. You are right..... the money he spends on the diesel car would probably pay his fuel bill for his Rover 100 anyway.
Just out of interest, any idea why?
Pikeys like a badge with a bit of 'bling' about it. Well, they like 'bling' in general - hence the overly chromed top of the range Land Cruisers they tow their caravans with.
As for the derv thing, I can only assume it's because they're either running them on 'red' derv or they're nicking it from trucks parked up overnight.
I decided to get a 220SDi at one point - tried a few and was pretty impressed by the performance and general diving manners, but I didn't get one in the end because I couldn't find many with ABS and absolutely none with ABS and A/C. ABS is a must for my daily driver, and a/c nearly a must in summer.
The 400 is actually pretty decent too, apart from the image and some slightly rattly plastics - not much slower than the 200, and ABS and a/c are a LOT more common.
Travellers of most kinds (except the new age scruffy scumbags) wear their wealth, whether it is the most over priced but tacky clothes, two tones of gold and rope chains, or expensive motors.
They go for motors that keep their quailty, and the same shape for a while. Diesels are favourite because it can be run on red, and they can split the fuel between the car and the transit.
Quite often they will pay cash for a large brand new car, disconnect or knobble the speedo, drive interstellar mileage all over the country for three to four years, then reconnect the speedo a couple of months before selling, and sell it as a very low mileage car on a private plate to a sucker.
They don't trust banks, and prefer the tax man not to have ever heard of them, hence gold, clothes cars, huge cravans with satellite and surround with 40" TVs, loads of chrome and gold on everything and readies.
