Why not a spend a bit more (or even the same amount for the 'run around') and forget the new car?

I wouldn't bother buying a diesel as a stop-gap as it'll take you quite a long time to recover the costs of it.

I run an Alfa 155 50 miles to work and 50 miles back each day, returning anywhere from 28 to 35 mpg, not great but I can live with it.

Yep, especially the earlier Mk3s, which I'm pretty sure an L reg will just count as. The later ones were noticeably more sluggish as they had much tighter emissions controls. I think they also had airbags as well, so you should be able to tell the difference. You should easily average 55mpg with a diesel Fester. Horrible to drive, but great on fuel.

But why piss away money on a new car? A good bet would be something between the two. A late shape Rover 220D features the excellent L-series engine (no relation to the K-series), which is derived from the old Perkins Prima diesel as fitted to Maestros and Montegos. A bit unrefined, but a much more solid feel than a lot of later diesels (TDCIs and the like) and brilliant economy, easily as good as a Mk3 Fiesta, but probably better. You could well regularly see 60mpg out of a 220D. They're a turbodiesel as well, so quite spritely on performance (nothing quick, but reasonable). And you should be able to get one for something between a grand and 1500 quid.

Yeah the 220SDi is a great motor - quick too if you catch the torque wave right. Make sure you get an SDi and not the Di. The former features an intercooler, electric fuel pump, and 103Bhp and is much quicker than the latter which does without an intercooler, had a mechanical fuel pump and gives 86Bhp. Both will go to the moon and back though with no trouble.

As for the 206, well I quite like them. It looks nice enough, but a friend of mine has a 2 year old one and the build quality is truly shocking....

The SDi and Di have the same (superb) engine. It's the SD and D that have the 86bhp non-intercooled lump.

S'trewth. My 2.5l BM gives 32mpg when driven reasonably well.

Anyway, back to the original point - why not stick with the Metro if it's only for a month or two. The amount of fuel saving by buying an interim 2nd hand Diesel will be as nothing compared to the hassle of buying it and selling the Metro and will look utterly insignificant against the amount you'll be throwing away on a new 206.

I'm almost tempted to get one as a cheap runabout and sell the Audi to raise cash levels, as those 220's are not much more than banger money now, but they're still modern-ish (i.e. don't smell and rust like an old banger, and have things like PAS etc.). Like most things, I probably won't bother though!

Out of interest what sort fuel economy do you average from yours?

Peugeot 205 diesel will cost you £250-£750 and should give 45-60 mpg.

Unsurprisingly, this is actually a pikey favourite with the ones that have a bit of cash to spend. As are expensive diesel Mercs.

Yeah, I put together an aruement like that for buying a V6 petrol vs a V6 (or inline 4 even) diesel; I found that petrol cars were going for £13k and diesel cars were £15k or £17k. On a £15k car it would have taken around 32k miles for it to be worth getting a diesel, or in my wife's case, about four years!

I'd agree if it was a new or nearly new car but with something a lot older the price difference between petrol and diesel models will be negligible.
