Air Con problem - Main Dealer or Specialist

I've an intermittent problem on my BMW E39 520's air con. As the fan speed drops to a lower speed I get a whistling noise, which then disappears if the fan speed increases.

I couldn't get this replicated at its last service - does this sound like something a specialist could help with or am I better (& poorer ) letting my dealer have another play with this.

Air con seems to be working fine other than this

Fan motor bearing?

If so is this a job for the air con people e.g. air medic etc or better suited to a dealer/independent specialist

Sounds like it might be a mechanical fault rather than an a/c one. Just speculating, but maybe something trapped in the a/c ducting, that's affected by the passage of air past it. Possibly something in the motor itself. Without actually hearing the noise, it's difficult to suggest a cause. Mike.

DIY; and pull it then put one drop of oil on each bearing or main dealer if you're feeling flush, actually all they'll likeley do is replace the fan and attached motor.

My BMW AC used to start making a slight whilstling sound when it was low on gas. A regas fixed it.

Any idea of price for a regas

Andrew Newton ( snipped-for-privacy@virgin.net) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Going by the signs outside more and more garages, £60 or so seems about the norm, now that many medium-age cars have aircon.

My experience is that most dealers will not attempt to fix air-con themselves. Although they will accept your car into their workshops - they arrange a visit from a mobile air-con medic - and then add £100 or so on to his costs to make up your bill! You are far better going direct to someone who specialises in air-con rather than a main dealer.

Is this just with the air-con working or with heating only?

With mine, it was caused by the driver's side micro filter housing being incorrectly fitted to the bulkhead. It uses a sort of bayonet fitting and is fiddly to put back properly after checking the brake fluid level, etc. Or was just too difficult for my dealer - like much else. ;-(

Mine was caused be a foreign body (a leaf) trapped in the duct just behind one of the fascia nozzles. I used a screwdriver to break it up and it blew out.

Proviso: car might not have had aircon or pollen filter.
