By different modules do you mean in the car? If so, then yes - the ABS, SRS and ECU etc are often completely independent however interrogation of them often uses a standard protocol.
Most likely. That's effectively what I did with my bodge-up.
It could well be that some adapters are a bit more intelligent, perhaps map ping multiple pins, injecting power or even translating on-the-fly. I'm gue ssing now though, but it wouldn't surprise me that you might have to cater for more than just physical differences in some cases.

Brilliant, ta (that is was I guessed from your endeavours). ;-)
Hey, it worked. ;-)
Understood. I did notice a little black 'chip' on the one I saw briefly but didn't see it close enough to see if it was something as simple as a voltage regulator or something more fancy. ;-)
I might see if my mate can find me a slot tomorrow and see if his Suntune can see things my basic reader can't.

Did you have any issues getting OBDAutoDoctor to connect to your reader please as I can't get it to connect to my mini ELM b/t reader from anything (Android phone, tablet (both OK with Torque to said reader) or PC (Windows / Linux). The hardware seems to pair ok (in all cases), it's just that it can't seem to talk to it at all?
Do you remember what reader you have?

Mrcheerful
oddly enough I have had problems connecting on a focus, yet not on the merc it helped me greatly with. Problems connecting to a meriva, and no problems with a Fusion where it showed the problem straight away.
on the focus it pairs up , shows some data like rpm, then seems to lose connection, it is an elm scan 327 bluetooth and I am using it with an android samsung galaxy tab.
I intend to try it with a laptop running win7 and see what happens tomorrow on a saab with actual problems.

So, are we saying the BT side of it paired up ok on each, just the when you click on 'Connect' it doesn't (on those you mention you have problems with)?
Hmm, same Sumsung Galaxy Tab here (II) and of course a Meriva. At least that is following some sort of pattern.
Ok, well I'd be interested to hear how that goes. I'm also wondering about the BT dongle on the laptop. There is one inbuilt that couldn't see the OBD dongle at all yet an external one did (and paired).
I might go for a USB version as that rules out any BT connectivity issues. ;-)

My 2003 MINI had a separate computer for the airbags, and an OBD tool wouldn't reset it. You had to get the special reset tool for it, and use the OBD port under the steering wheel, not the one under the bonnet.
I made the mistake of disconnecting the driver's seat without disconnecting the battery first. This resulted in an airbag fault light, which is now an MOT failure. Got the reset tool (Memoscan B200) off eBay for 18 quid and that reset it. Main dealer wanted 80 quid just to look at it.
I think BMW changed things after the facelift in 2004, so this may not apply to your model, but thought it worth mentioning.

Just a bit of feedback for you on this then, now I have my new reader. ;-)
It sounds like there are some PCB relays in there as when you initiate the scan of a particular bus you hear a distinct 'click' as (I presume) the dataline is being 'mapped' to the relevant connection.
I think I saw possibly 3 different pins in use (it announces them as it uses them).
All the systems we have on the particular car responded (ECU, ABS, BCM) except the Body > Instrument one seemed to have a bit of an initial hiccup and then wouldn't (ever) display any of the actual metrics (ODO / fuel etc). The field values were set but there was no data. It was identical on our daughters 2001 Corsa though (and al the other systems responded correctly), so not sure if it's a fault with the actual reader or the system / concept.
It was very interesting going though many of the fields though, even seeing things like door open sensors toggling (as you open the doors) and even the brightness level of the dash. In fact pretty well everything bodywise you could toggle we did / tested, as with watching the engine running and nothing looked out of place. Till we turned it off and it wouldn't start again that is. ;-(

Indeed - keeping clear of BMW!
Took it to a BMW independent. Not sure how it was diagnosed, but turned out to be rear seatbelt fastener. Part about £45, installed and error codes reset £50.
