I'm just about to replace the condenser and the drier on my Mondeo. The Haynes BOL says that I have to add a certain amount of refrigerant oil to each component. Does this have to be done when the component is fitted or can it be done when it goes to the specialist for re-gassing?

There will be no point in adding oil now, as it will all be sucked out again when the system is pulled down to vacuum prior to recharging.

not really, the pump is only meant to remove gas, some 'airborne' oil is dragged out and separated, but by no means all the oil comes out. if it is recommended to put a certain amount in each component then do so, but be sure to use the right oil.

Sorry, but if it is done properly, and this means upwards of an hour on the pump, then 90% of the oil does indeed come out.
You initially vacuum from the HP point, then add a blast of nitrogen via the LP point which aids pulling out the oil whilst the pump is still sucking.
I have seen exploded compressors where too much oil has been present.

The auto ones don't blast nitrogen through, perhaps that makes a lot of difference.

Thanks Tim and Mr C. I've given it some thought and as I can't guarantee that the people doing the re-gas will do it properly, I'll stick some oil in anyway just in case they don't evacuate it properly. I've established that I need to use Pag 46 oil and my local motor factor has some in stock.
