Alternator woes

Hi group,

I am not car literate in any way, but I am wondering if any of you could give me some clues regarding the problem I am having with my 1999 Astra Club's alternator.

Last november the alternator went ( warning light on dash, loss of power etc) and was replaced successfully. In this case it was not charging the battery.

Last week I was driving for 30 seconds when the power steering went, the stereo went off, the dashboard lit up like a xmsa tree (including the air bag and computer fault lights). The car was still running, but quite rough.

Diagnosis - Alternator overcharging. Alternator replaced, earth lead(?) replaced, battery replaced as it had a bulge in it. Three days later the same thing has happened.

Has anyone got any idea what might cause the alternator to repeatedly fail, or have I had extremely bad luck and got another dodgy alternator fitted?

Michael.

WM ( snipped-for-privacy@mak.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Or perhaps the alternator wasn't the problem?

Check all the earth wires you can see especially the one from ther engine to the chassis.
