Astra idle speed control valve

Hi,

my Astra 1.4 (R reg, last of the old types) has a knackered idle speed control valve. I've had it disconnected the past year, preferring my heel and toe skills (til it warms up) to forking out 60 quid for a new one. (Or so I was quoted I think).

Anyway I did take the thing out when it first went wrong, and squirted WD 40 onto the motor shaft thingy in a vain attempt to free off whatever was sticking - no difference. Is there anything you can do with these? What normally is the problem? I'm guessing there is some kind of position sensor inside? Mine just constantly runs fast, faster, then back to fast again in rather a random fashion. Not very handy.

ITs basically a rod that moves inside a set of coils. Usually one of them packs up. THere's not a lot you can do other than replace them if cleaning doesn't sort it.

Ah, so its really just a motor. I guess the ECU just monitors RPM and tries to tell the motor to compensate, which can't. I was hoping there would be some kind of potentiometer you could clean.

More a solonoid, but yes. You can try to clean the gunk out of it if it's sticking, but if it's just worn out that might not help...

There should be two "ports", air-in, air-out, on the machined face that bolts onto the throttle body, the solenoid / rod controlling a valve between the ports. Basically squirt a load of carb-cleaner (not WD40) into that, leave to soak for an hour (put the lot in a plastic bag), pour out the gunk, repeat, etc.

I've had joy doing this on the ICV on one Cavalier, the second Cav, with the same problem, I think the ICV was just worn, cleaning helped, for a few weeks, but the problem recurred within a few weeks. I ended up £10 out of pocket visiting a local scrappy, and problem solved.

Don't forget the gasket between the ICV and the throttle-body.

Not sure about the astra ISCV but this works on a Daewoo Lanos suffering from high idle speed.

Ignition on, disconnect iscv plug. Ignition off, reconect iscv Repeat above 4 or 5 times and start engine. May not idle unasisted so keep foot on throttle pedal till ecu re-adjusts ISCV.
