Boot light woes

Hello,

This is about a 2001 vw golf.

Not the most urgent job in the world that needs doing but something that annoys me. My boot light is not working. Never noticed it before. I took the light fitting off looked at it, there was some rusty looking colour on quite a lot of it, cleaned it all off with a little wire brush type thingy, went down to halfords bought a new bulb put it in and no joy. I took it down to GSF and asked if they had any idea and they couldn't help, was quite rude actually but no matter.

So I was wondering if anyone could shed a little light on it *what an auwful pun ... shame on me *

what would my next port of call be ? (bearing in mind I have 2 left hands)

cheers

Rust??, it's a Golf.....

Dunno, but I imagine the Golf probably uses a mercury switch in the bootlid somewhere, if that helps.

It's only four years old - hardly a shed.

I've got vague recollections of sorting one of these.

From memory, some of the electrical connectors fell apart, and a new boot loom had to be fitted. And I'm sure the switch is part of the lock mechanism.

It was a caramel \ brownish colour not all over the metal bits but on the bit where the lights element touches it and some of the other bits. Best I can describe it.

lol its sometimes feels like a shed being a bit bulky looking.

.... not sure what else to check on it ...

Scratching beneath the surface its getting more complicated ... I was hoping it was just a new bulb required.

I might need to buy myself a multi-meter perhaps? to check there is power coming to the light maybe ? never used one but I gather this would be a logical move. I think argos sell them.
