I have a 2002 clio, i have noticed when cleaning the alloys that the break callipers seem to have metalic parts close to the disk ie 2mm. This in my simple mind means that the pads need changing Quick, so since an 18k service is due i booked it in for next friday.

Should the pads have worn down in just 17k i dont drive the car that hard and also would it be worth upgrading the pads for something that doesnt give black dust? if this is indeed available.

PS Service is £130 WOW didnt think it would be that expensive for a glorified oil and filter change!

If the backs of the pads are within 2mm then you need new pads but the caliper itself sits that close to the disk. Take the wheel off & have a look at the top of the caliper (worth it just to check how tight the wheel nuts are)

17k sounds reasonable. Since pads became asbestos free, they don't last as long. Some big automatics (Scorpios particularly) kill a set of pads in less than 10,000 miles!

Driving style too,

when i was taught to drive we was taught to move up the box as speed increases, but then say i was on the eastlancs road doing 60 to a set of red lights i was taught to leave it in top and brake to a stop and only come out of 5th once im stopped,

now my dad was taught to use the engine to assist braking, moving down the box to assist this.

Which saves on brakes but wears on clutch & gearbox instead.

Brakes are cheap, clutches are expensive, gearboxes are really expensive.

What's cheaper in fact is to release the accelarator earlier...
