Bulbs (sorry!)

Need to come up with a wish list of presents for Xmas.

Any views on the Osram Silver Star bulbs? Is there a down side to them - is the life shorter than normal bulbs? (Car - 2001 Honda Civic)

They are an excellent retrofit for standard lamps. A significant improvement in output over standard halogens. However, the life is approximately 40-60% reduced again compared with standard items. Worth every penny. Avoid *any* "Cool Blue" or "Super Dooper Xtra Brite" and other s**te often found on Ebay. Stick with Osram or Philips and you won't go wrong.

I've had some Ring 100/55 lamps for about six years. They've been through four cars and are still going fine. Good compromise - standard dip but plenty of light on main.

I have these in my land rover and in the wifes saab, life is supposed to be shorter but for £20 a pair I'm sticking with them, there is more light and the light is whiter making it easier to see, I love them. I was running 100/55's before but the Osrams give more useable light, far better in my opinion. Had them about a year now.

I have had these and the Philips VisionPlus and they're both good (although the VisionPlus did last less time).

Handy tip: if you're in Halfords, check their own brand 50%+ bulbs - they are often made by Osram or Philips (it's imprinted on the metal bulb holder). I have a pair of these (Osram) on my Accord and they're as good as the Silver Stars (but cheaper).

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Chris" saying something like:

Ditto. I bought them in preference to (yet again) pissing around fitting relays and found the light output to be roughly the same as 100/80s.

Funny thing was, after fitting them outside the shop I wasn't too impressed with them on the journey home... the following night they were much better and last night they were superb. Seems as if they take some hours of runtime to come up to full brightness and then stay there.

The cheapest I've found for Osram Silverstar +50% bulbs is Maplins at £15 per pair. Free postage above £35 order, £2.50 postage below £35. I've had a pair in my '97 Primera for 12 months, much better than standard.
