Car buying businesses

Thinking of selling my car, and tried on Autotrader but couldn't get close to what I wanted (6k for a 2008 Mini Cooper S).

Out of interest, I tried webuyanycar and they say they'll give £5900. Is there some catch? Do they specialise in beating down at inspection?

Since they'd expect to make a profit I'd say yes. Most tend to think their car is worth more than it will fetch.

Just wondering about the mode of indignity they attempt to inflict.

Most tend to think their

Hope not think, I suspect. I think they know what it's worth :-)

Be careful.

I thought I had found the ideal car for us, but could not reach a satisfactory deal on the p/x. They were offering around £21K, webuyanycar offered......... £15k.

Similar age, spec and mileage to ours were on offer, retail, at £24K+.

6 or 7 years ago wbac offered 90 quid for my sister's diesel vectra (1999 version) She kept it and it still drives well. Apparently the chance of getting the initial offer is nil, they turn up and make a silly low offer, which often gets accepted as the seller has planned on the next car and wants some money straight away. They also charge an admin fee which comes off their offer.

Must admit it's what I suspected. They have to pay for those TV ads somehow.

However, if you're selling something they know they can punt on through their retail arm, on a high interest credit deal, to someone on benefits, you'll get an offer that beats main dealer trade-in prices.

Well, the car is pretty much tip top, which is a shame because the fact it's been looked after doesn't seem to be reflected in the value.

Might be amusing to see what they offer and why.

I think it's something they could sell on - it's pretty much prime stock for them. There's always some tart with a spray tan who works in a call centre who'll sign up for a 5 year credit deal at 29.9% APR to get themselves behind the wheel of a 'fashionable' car.

They'll give it a quick wipe over, stick a set of 'Evergreen' tyres on it and it'll be 'car of the week' at your local Car Shop / Car Craft.
