Changing oil container

Can anybody reccomend something I could buy for use when changing the oil on my car.

My local garage said they can dispose of the oil for a £1 alos batteries as well for the same.

Thats it really, bit of a short simple post form me for once :@)

Keep the used plastic 5 litre oil containers the oil comes in.

Take them to your local civic amenity tip ... mine takes them at no charge.

I use a caravan style waste container. I lay it flat and pour the oil in via the side entry (with a funnel), then when I get to the tip I use the neck to empty it into the bund.

I think they take batteries also.

I've got a container purpose made for the job. It's rather larger than a 5 litre oil container and has a tray in the top with a plug in it. You remove the plug and drain the oil into the tray which then drains into the container underneath. Put the plug back in and you can carry it. There's a second normal cap on the top for emptying it. Of course you still need to do some cleaning up, but it's not a bad DIY idea. It was bought in a local accessory shop.

I cut the side out of a 5 litre can. When I've run the oil into it I pour it into another one which is not cut out. Then it can be disposed of at a council tip or wherever.

Sounds ideal for changing oil!

By anychance do you know of a website that sells them so I can have a look at it so I know what to look for when I'm about halfords or gsf.

I used to do that but either there was just enough oil to completely fill the old can to wherever I'd cut it out to or I'd bang it on something or trip on my way to transfer the oil. Cat litter is quite good at soaking up oil BTW. Now I use the same thing as Connor does.

Well, actually I have two cut-out cans and switch them over quickly.

I've got a five gallon container you can lay on it's side as a oil drainer. It has a recessed side with a hole in it. Put the plug in the hole, stand it upright and it looks like a 5 gallon petrol can thing, has a screw off lid in the top to drain the oil back out into the FREE local council disposal place. Can't remember where I got it, probably Halfords. Local council tip also takes batteries free. See if you have one locally

looks quite good.

Hopefully these will be able to slide in under the car and clear everything to get under the sump.

Personally I'd go for the Sealey one. Has a greater capacity, is lower, simpler to use, and is cheaper. Mike.

Yes - that's the idea.

The only thing you have to watch is very thin oil (hot) can come out faster than the tray part can handle.

Nothing recommended yet seems to have many advantages over my square, for ease of pouring, plastic washing up bowl and a funnel to decant the used oil back into its original container for transport to the waste site.

I am cheap!

I use one cut-out can, with a big cut-out, and keep it on its side at all times. If you're careful you can unscrew the cap with it still on its side if you tip it back just a bit. Fine for three litres of oil in a 5 litre can (current car only contains about 3 litres). Then pour the oil out into another can using a funnel.

No need to pay the garage, I've never known a council tip/"recycling centre" charge for disposing of oil.
