charging problems

Pug 106 1.5D 97P

The battery light started to glow dim when driving, then after a couple of days it got worse and no matter how hard the revs the only time it went out was at idle (or switched off). (Diode pack I thought?). Then one day after a

30 minute drive and leaving the car for over 1 hour it wouldn't start. The battery was so dead it wouldn't power the radio. Lucky enough to get a guy to jump me off. When I got home I put the battery on charge, it took 18 hours to recharge fully.

While it was recharging I cleaned all the earth leads. Put the battery back on, went for a 10 minute run then left it running on the drive for 20 minutes with all electrics on. Battery light never flickered. Didn't use the car for three days. Started first time, did same as above.

The only visible problem is the fuel gauge now flicks from 1/4 full (which is where it should read) to empty constantly, which it has never done.

Could the alternator be on it's way out or do I have another problem?
