Cheap aircon servicing needed - Manchester<>Leeds

I bought a Laguna 1.9dti with duff aircon in December. With all the other probs it cames with, aircon simply slipped down the list of priorities.

Now we're breaking away from frosty mornings, its time to get it sorted.

The system light comes on the dash , but when I check the compressor, its definately not engaging. Others have indicated that this doesn't necessarily mean the compressor is bust, or the electrics are not working. The likely problem ( I'm currently led to believe ) is that there is no gas in the system and the lack of pressure isn't enabling the clutch to engage.

So what I'd like to know is are there any decent honest cheap air-con specailists who can check my system, test for leaks and then re-gas it ready for summer. Since air-con has been pretty standard on even the average family car now for the last five years, I'm hoping there's plenty of support available now.

I think a re-gas is about £60, but if anyone knows cheaper places or ones that they trust 100% I'd appreciate any recommendations.

The snag is that if it has leaked out, the leak will have to be fixed. And the most common reason is compressor seals - which means replacement. Which isn't cheap.

Tell me about it - I had to turn down a free Alfa 164 V6 due to a seized compressor pump... cost of the pump was twice the trade value on the car, ffs!

If anyone knows of a way to bypass the aircon compressor pump with a shorter serpentine belt on an Alfa 164 V6, give me a shout ;-)

Most have a magnetic clutch which 'freewheels' even if the compressor is knackered. Different arrangement on the Alfa?

Aye, definitely is. The whole pump has seized up - probably a knackered bearing on the shaft, so the car is undrivable as the PAS / alternator etc are all driven by the same serpentine belt.

There's a feature on air-con in the Professional Motor Mechanic this week which you can pick up at parts wholesalers. Is your system R12 or R134A?
