Peugeot 1.4 Diesel Water Leak

My son's Pug 106 1.4D has a water leak, that appears to be coming from the water pump housing. It's now losing at least a couple of pints a day.

HBOL seems to describe the housing as being removable separately from the water pump itself, i.e. without removing the cambelt etc. Anyone any experience of this? Might a new O-ring cure it, or are they notorious for problems in this area? It looks a so-and-so to get at, so I'd like some idea of what problems we're likely to face before I dive in.

The pump is driven by the cam belt. Major careful work involved to change this. Stop using the car or the engine may be wrecked, either by water loss or belt failure.
