Whats the best way of testing to see if my clutch is going to pack in Is there anything I can do myself or should the garage test it.
Is a diesel if that makes any difference

Put the car into top gear, handbrake on, rev the engine to say about 2000 rpm and let up the clutch pedal. If the engine stalls, the clutch is probably OK. If it doesn't, but goes on revving, the clutch is slipping. Press the pedal back down again quickly and think about getting a new clutch soon. Diesel doesn't make any difference.

& if you do it for long enough you're bound to need a new clutch :-) There aren't any real ways of telling how long you've got till one starts slipping except for a general guess based on the car (e.g. 4WD Sierra it's a 50000m service item, my A6 has done >200000 on it's current one), why do you think it might be going?

RG stated how to test the clutch. When it get very bad, the rev counter needle goes up while the speedo doesn't and you can't get up hills.
My vehicle also squeals when you lift the pedal. When I can be bothered I'll put a drop of oil or maybe some grease around the exposed ends of the cable and on the bolt the pedal pivots on. This will fix it. If you put your head under the steering wheel and listen closely, you should be able to find where the squeal comes from. Some people like to stick a length of hose onto their ear. I expect the source of the squeal is nowhere near the gearbox.

Thats what my symptoms are, especially when changing gear fast / running the engine hard
It sounds like you might be squealing the tyres then. This is caused by not matching the revs properly when you change gear. If the engine is going faster than the wheels, you can get a bit of wheel spin when changing.
From 4th gear to 5th gear in a non turbo diesel???
