Contemplating fitting new exhaust

My brother in laws car: vw golf 1.6 01

My exhaust is dieing of old age and almost falling apart at least the middle part is. The backbox ? and the front part seem fine the middle is rusting to death. It has been on my car for 2 years since owning it. I got a quote from kwik fit out of curiosity and they said it all needed replacing and quote me £354.09p which sounds like a lot of money. What are my options, I am halfway capable of basic maintenance but have never mucked about with an exhaust whilst on my back on the floor, but would be game to try (that might haunt me I know) or buy the parts required and get a exhaust place to fit it for a few quid ?

Appreciate some advice on that and other experience changing exhausts ( I have all the basic maintenance tools and a good jack and axle stands)

Now onto my next question where can I source these parts I would need. I need a good quality of part and as I'm keeping the car till it dies only has

38k on it. I would be looking to put a decent part on it knowing bugger all in differences on types of exhausts I'll let you bring me up to speed. I hazily remeber someone telling me if you love the car buy stainless steel ?

Anyways thats the jist of my question.

Thanks

Phone up non national franchised exhaust centre. Not worth fitting it yourself TBH with their prices.

Don't do it.

I was thinking of doing the exhaust on my 75 this week, but I'm glad I took it to my local mechanic, 'cos it was on his ramps for 3 hours trying to get the old one and all the rusted brackets off.

In news:B5adnWh9U--34q snipped-for-privacy@bt.com, Kev' wittered on forthwith;

Back and middle box for a Mk4 Golf 1.4 is about £80 from places like Chester Exhaust Supplies. Most small garages will fit exhausts for £10 or £20 provided you don't want a receipt and you take the car in at a time when the garage is quiet. I had an exhaust fitted to my old 190E for a tenner.

Yea I think you lot are right it could turn out to be more trouble than its worth and I don't fancy crawling around the floor. I know a little exhaust centre I could ask. Also I was thinking I oculd save some money by finding out online where I can buy the parts I need and have them delivered to me and then take it all to the fitters ? anyonw know if such a place exists ?

Cheers

Echoing what others have said, leave it to an exhaust centre - most towns have a local company who will be far cheaper than the chains. Exhaust bolts always rust and are often inaccessible. The specialists have ramps, air tools and oxy-acetylene torches which are often needed.

The only exhaust I'm willing do myself is a classic Mini - because it's fairly easy and I've yet to find an exhaust shop that can get it right!

excellent stuff mungo :) ... I was passing my local non franchise tyre exhaust place and they said they can fit it for £35 if I supply the parts, they also said they can get the parts quite cheap aswell if I wanted them to do the lot. Real nice people. Unlike the spot faced 25 year old from kwik fit who had a nervous breakdown finding out what parts my car required.

...wonders off to fill boots.

Trouble with places like kwickfit is that they will do their best to break the rest of the system to warrant changing the whole lot. A small place will more likely only attempt to replace the part which really needs replacing. Get him to give you a price, might not be worth shopping around for the bits yourself, and having to collect them.

Likely to reduce any hassle if a part fails early also.

Well I take the other route - I always souce and fit my own exhausts. I recently changed the whole lot, with the exception of cat and downpipe on my 2.0 ltr Cavalier.

The rear box, instead of being a 'shaped' part was a regular oval. This was quieried with both GM and local exhaust franchises, who told me it was all you could get now because of the age of the car. Trouble is this one kept hitting the chassis rail - annoying to say the least.

Upshot is I picked up a nearly new ( still had the label on ) shaped rear box on e-bay for a fiver. Fitted inside an hour. All those parts, including some rubbers, cost me less than ?100 - labour for the faffing about would probably have doubled that.
