Cooling fan issue

Morning all;

I have an N reg Vauxhall Astra TD with a non-functioning cooling fan (only noticed last night when I was stuck in a jam!). I know the 40a fuse to it is fine and that there is power to that point, but beyond that I am a bit hazy as to how the system works; I assume the fan runs off a thermostatic switch of some sort, but would this be in the cooling system or from the one on the engine management system?

I cant see anything on the radiator where I would expect such a switch to be, nor can I see any obvious wires leading off it. Any clues as to what / where I should be looking?

Something else I noticed while my engine was running ever so hot; every time I dropped the clutch the engine revved out of control for a few moments or until I released the clutch while in gear - is this something caused by the overheating or another issue that is being exacerbated by it?

Thanks for any advice would be greatly appreciated ;)

two possiblities...one could be the stat itself, the other being the fan. to test the stat, disconnect the multiplug from the stat itself (not sure of the location on these engines, could possibly be in the cooling pipework, or tapped into the block) and short the 12v feed to earth. this should cause the temp guage to read full and the rad fan to cut in. if it does, you probably have a knackered stat. if not, take a 12v feed straight from the battery and apply to the terminal of the fan motor (watch your fingers!) if the fan still refuses to start, you possibly have a burnt out motor.

no doubt the usual bunch will be along to offer more help on this, and possibly to your clutch issue too!
