Corsa oil problem

My GF has just texted me to say that her S-reg Corsa's oil light keeps coming on, even though she has just added some more oil. Could this indicate a failing/failed oil pump? If not, what else?

This is only so that I can impress her when I get home :-)

Yes.

Catastrophic oil leak. Faulty oil pressure sensor GF adding oil to wrong hole in engine ;-)

Good luck. Suggesting the third item on my list may not impress her though...

If she ran it low enough on oil that the oil pressure warning light came on for any length of time, knackered big end/main bearings/crankshaft are possibilities...

But being a Corsa it could just be the oil pressure release valve on the pump needs cleaning/new spring. Checking the dipstick is the 1st port of call though.

Checking the dipstick *before*the light comes on, of course!

Hehe, the boyfriend of a girl I worked with tried to impress her by topping up the oil in her car, apparently it took about 9 litres before it was topped up enough, that is, until he could see the oil level through the filler in the rocker cover. It's not just women that do stupid things with cars.

It depends on how much oil she added and where it was on the dipstick when she finished. If it was virtually empty, a litre isn't going to make much difference.

That I don't know, but will find out later. I may have to demonstrate the correct way to use a dipstick. ;-) [that's enough double entendres - ed.]

Thank you everyone who responded, and so quickly too.

My cousin has a similar plated corsa with one of the 3 pot engines, a problem he had as the oil light flicking on randomly. Fault was a leaking oil pressure sensor (front of engine left hand side IIRC, cost about £4 from autovaux.

The oil pressure sensor was indeed the culprit. Cheap to replace, anyway.

Thanks again, folks.
