Cost of an oil change

Jan 28, 2006 8 Replies

Any record costs of a typical oil change worth of engine oil - we do get conned into using the main dealers in order to retain warranty conditions.

My mate reckons around £60 for his BMW.

£60 every 15000 miles is £0.004 [less than half a new penny a mile for the arithmetically challenged] a mile which is certainly not going to break many records except for thrift perhaps.

My local BMW dealer has quoted £83.91 for 6.5 litres of Mobil 1.

If your warranty relies on 'service by a VAT-registered garage, rather than a BMW dealer, you could make friends with a local garage and supply the Mobil 1 that you've bought from ebay........

My warranty period has long gone - the dealer quote was purely for amusement purposes only.

I imagine their service customer profile is fairly well defined by the flyer they've just sent out - offering to match any local independent specialist prices for an oil service, Inspection I or II for cars over four years old.

£15 at National Tyres, or about £11 for DIY with proper VW oil and Filters.

Well if we are going for lows then I can change my own oil using oil bought in a 45 gallon drum [and it is not cheap oil either] for £4.50. That's £2 for the oil and £2.50 for the filter.

OTOH there is a new Deutz four cylinder diesel industrial engine of the common 4.5 litre class which has an oil filter which costs £85+Vat. No doubt this cost will have to come down substantially soon but for now, that is the price.

BMW doesn't specify or supply Mobil 1.

We've BTDTGTTS before Dave :-)

Sytner Leicester do both.
