Well TBH that has always been the case, even on the old system. It's just that some garages chose not to charge even though they were entitled to.

I think it might have been obvious for a while how unroadworthy it was. Nice to know you thought it was OK to run such a dangerous rotting shed on the road.
_Some_ cars don't rot. Most don't rot as badly as they used to. But there are still clear examples. Look at Fiesta rear wings round the filler neck for example.
Chris Bolus ( snipped-for-privacy@RILEYELFb0lus.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :
I was going to say "Ford Ka", but...
Even so... They don't rot anywhere NEAR as badly as cars used to.
Austin 1300, for example.
i should have inserted voluntary licenceing scheme (voluntary for the time being), unless another super complaint is made to goverment,

Paying 29 quid for an MOT is an insult.
It takes two people to test a vehicle, and could take up to an hour. Having a full retest done for free means that you are paying the test station
7.25 quid per person per test. Take out of that the overheads, and they may as well be paying you for the privilege of testing your vehicle.VOSA cannot enforce a fixed fee, but they currently recommend that the MOT test fee should be 44.15 quid. If everyone had to pay that then I'm sure they would keep their cars in better condition all year round to reduce the chance of failing an having to pay for a full retest.
Had been off the road for a while, took it for a test to see what needed doing.
sQuick..
IIRC it's up to the individual garage what they charge for an MOT - up to the maximum - and whether they offer a free or reduced cost re-test.
Stats for this?
God help us. There were virtually no accidents caused by DIY gas work. Most were caused by cowboy 'pros'. Hence you can still DIY gas work in your own home legally, but not for others. Despite what CORGI might have you believe.
And the garage trade has a far worse reputation than the gas trade ever had. From top marque main dealers downwards you're unlikely to get satisfactory work which is appalling. And plain fraud by charging for work not done is rife.
I'm not in favour of some types of regulation since these are often set up by the trade itself in its favour. But the motor trade in general needs sorting. You're very lucky to find an honest competent garage and that is a national disgrace.
Don't know how many MOTs I've had in 40 odd years of driving with usually two cars, but I've never seen two paid people on an MOT as I'm always present and do the switching on and off of the lights myself, etc. Perhaps there should be a discount for driver present MOTs?
Since when?
Phew. S'OK then. Trouble is there's too many ropey old Trannies on the road.
One to rock the steering while the other looks for play, for example. If you take the car for an instant test you do it.
I asked that, none were forthcoming.
you certainly did, "Any official reference (URL's) to support these to statements?" but you did'nt ask for stats & i did reply
and my reply again if you missed it

your right, it you will get in any walks of life your going to get the bad with the good, but unfortunatly you only tend to hear about the bad.
Hmmm... isn't that what I said above?
Ahhh I mis typed my question "Any official reference (URL's) to support these to statements?" should have been "Any official reference (URL's) to support these two statements?"
Your answer seemed to refer to the second statement
registered gas fitters.
What Mr Plowman and myself would like further information/stats/urls on, is to support your statement
Of course not.
Plenty of stats from Which? etc about poor garage servicing, though. And fraud.
I had a 70,000 mile BMW MOT't recently. They failed it on play on a front wheel bearing and excessive wear on rear discs and pads. Offered to do the work saying the wheel bearing just needed adjustment.
No BMW I know of made in the last 15 years have adjustable front wheel bearings. It's an assembly and expensive. But has a long life.
Took it to my specialist BMW place who don't do while you wait MOTs. They MOT'd it with no advisories or any work. They reported the minimum pad thickness as 4mm - less than 1.5mm MOT fail. Discs were well above the minimum.
So not a matter of judgement but pure attempted fraud by the first garage.
It is, and you are correct.
