dealing with rust

I have some rust on my boot match just under the rear wiper glass area.

Whats the best way to deal with it... I'm not interested in spending hundreds at a body shop, the cars a bit bashed here and there so I trying to figure out how to fix it before it goes all the way through.

"Matthew.Ridges" gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

Clean it back to bright, shiny metal and paint with some good quality primer.

But, tbh, it's very unlikely to go through on anything recent. It'll just stay cosmetic.

Matt beat me to the car identification - if it is, then AIUI priming won't last long anyway.

Mk4 golf .. the car that aprantly never rusts.

Not to normal to get in this area on golfs aparantly, there was no previous damage there or anything maybe a stone chip or something and it just got worse. Although Ive seen the tailgates on ebay go for about £40 which might be a cheaper option if I find the same colour, but more effort stripping it all down and putting it on the new one and sticking it on.. from what I read as you says rub it down to bright, and use a rust remedy, a skim of body filler, rub down flat, prime, top coat and a coat of the shiney stuff.

If it's "a bit bashed", and you only want to stop it from perforating, I'd stop at the primer...

Hmmm I think thats a good idea. I'm trying hard not to sink any more money in to it than nescessary as I think it'll last 3/4 years anyway... hopefully :) then new used car time :)

A bit of Galvafroid & then prime it & topcoat, primers almost completely non-waterproof

Ahhh I completely forgot primer was like a sponge, been so long since I've done any bodywork. I'll have a google for the galvafroid. Quite looking forward to it, I've always liked doing bodywork, I think its the gratification of fixing something visual rather than under the bonet and everytime I walk poast I can say look I did that pat my back and grin at the lame effort of trying to blend a metalic paint lol.
