What is the most common cause of blue smoke coming from a deisel engine?
Depends on the engine i guess, but the same things as a petrol engine, rings, valve guides, value guide oil seals etc etc etc

Oil burning. Probably valve guides if it's on startup.

First off, to reiterate what the other guys said. :)
Secondly, and apologies if you know this, if you're only getting this smoke at start up, are you sure that it's bright blue in colour? A bluey grey white haze of smoke is quite normal for many diesels - it's unburnt diesel - and an increase of this smoke in conjunction with harder starting usually means that it's dropped one or more glow plugs.
