Diesel stalling

I am having a spot of bother with the Ducato 1.9td van. I can start it ok ( a bit reluctant) and set off but when I come to a junction and ease off the gas, the engine stalls. First the battery light comes on, then the oil one and then the engine dies.

After a bit of turning over it fires up and you can set off and go through the gears ok, but once you clutch down to first or even second it will die. If you scream along in first then its ok but once again when you take the power off it dies.

When you start the van the tickover is fine and it will keep ticking over ok until you set off and then return to tickover.

It first did this on boxing day when it was very, very cold and I thought it might be the diesel freezing but just tried it today and is doing the same thing and its about 10 degrees outside.

I wondering whether the problem might be the battery. I just tested it and its showing 12.35 volts - but it has been doing a lot of cranking each time it stalls - Would a tired battery make it die at low revs when there's not enough coming off the alternator - or is perhaps my alternator bust?

Any help much appreciated.

When it happened to me first time it was the metal pipes on the fuel tank corroded. Second time it was the flow pipe front to rear of the vehicle

Or just an old fuel filter.

Thanks for the replies on this. Problem was an air leak on one of the fuel pipes where it clipped onto the bottom of the fuel filter. Now sorted.
