Disabling Day Running Lights Volvo 460

Hello

I am currently the new owner of a 1991 red Volvo 460. This is the first time i have owned a Volvo and have a hit a minor niggle with it. Everytime i turn on the ignition the Headlights come on. I have been told these are referred to as 'day running light'. What i would like to know is - is it possible to disable these lights ?????

Thank you for any help you can supply

Should be a fuse you can pull....Other cars I've had with DRL's - Saab

99/Volvo 240 could be disabled this way...

Used to like the big bright sidelights these cars had, but not the headlight DRL's that volvo now uses....

Well you could disconnect the relay feed. Thereagain why do you care.

Probably counts as a modification for your insurance.

Why? They make it easier to see you during the day.

Don't understand why some people are so reluctant to turn on lights.

In the fog this morning (and all day!) i counted several people without their rear foglamps on and some twits were barrelling along without any lights at all!

For me this morning, it wasn't exactly a pea-soup-special, but without lights, cars tended to disappear. OTOH, there was no need at all for fog lights as standard headlights would have been fine. Interestingly enough, about 70% of the cars this morning had no lights on and all the 'usual suspects'[1] that generally have front fogs on had them turned off. Hopefully they'll forget to turn them back on again...

Add that to the dozy gits peering through a 6 inch square of scraped windscreen and you have a recipe for disaster. I spotted one bloke who hadn`t even scraped this much ice off and was driving with his head out of the drivers window. No lights either - Natch He did remember to turn his baseball cap round though, so it didn`t blow off.

Because they're not needed during the day in this country in normal conditions.

If you want people to turn their fog lights on I hope you were in an area where there was real fog as opposed to the light mist we had in the SE. I had to suffer endless fog lights because the scenery a mile away is a bit washed out and visibility was down to a 1000 yards.

open to debate but given the amount of the year we spend in fog./ mist / rain

our relatively short winter days , which may not get properly light due to fog/mist/ rain

plus the benefits in 'low sun' conditions

They're hardly a disadvantage though. Try spotting anything without them on , when it's raining, in an LDV's wing mirror.

Sorry, but which country do you live in? We actually don't spend /that/ much time in poor weather conditions. It's like arguing that the wipers should be permanently on.

Granted, but again a limited number of days.

And the magic word is "raining." This country is not /that/ wet!

Regarding Ovlov and the rest - I didn't use to object to them when they were large sidelights, but I find the current dipped beam jobs irritatingly dazzling on clear sunny days when they're not needed.

You're dazzled by a dip beam on a clear sunny day? Irritated, maybe,

In the winter they are more often than not, imho. Doesn't hurt.

Yes, it was fully foggy :)

It's easy to tell when foglights are needed - if you find yourself being slightly surprised and/or having to brake at finding a car in front of you on the road where you thought there was none a minute ago, then he needs his fogs on.

Cooo, real fog. Round my part of the world it's unusual to get anything terribly thick (but we get the lights anyway!)

Ok, ok, dazzled was the wrong word!

But there's a major disadvantage to wipers without rain, there's sod all advantage to switching the headlamps off
