Discount For Cash On Used Cars-How Much

Next week I will be looking at several cars, from dealers mostly. They are all priced at £3000 give or take a fiver and, with one exception which is from a Peugeot dealer which has no warranty and another being sold privately come with one months warranty.

Can I expect them to drop the advertised price on asking and how much could I expect to get off the price. It will be a cash sale. Stuart

Yes you expect to get a discount from a dealer for cash but it depends on how long they've had it & how desperate they are to shift it. Anywhere offering minimum part exchange values will normally negotiate to avoid being given a £75 knackered vauxhaul astra

It depends on the value of the car. If a car can sell easily in a private sale for £2500, a dealer would not take more than maybe £100 off a £3000 price tag. Some dealers inflate the prices just so that they can satisfy customers who like to haggle. Other dealers advertise lower prices to get customers into their yard.

and find something similar to the car you like. Tell the dealer you've seen one for £whatever, and you liked the colour but the wife didn't. Don't be affraid to walk away if it doesn't look like a good deal.

There have been posts about this before, but dealer waranties are not worth much unless you know a dealer with a good reputation for honouring them. They are certainly not worh the 20% - 25% mark-up that some dealers work to.

Our 2nd hand, 58k 3 year old Peugeot from a Peugeot dealer came with free 1 year's Peugeot warranty. Never needed it, but checking the small print didn't seem to have any horrendous get-out clauses. Maybe its just a specific thing to our dealer - but I understood that it was standard on all their 2nd hand cars, and I assumed it would be Peugeot wide.

I did ask them about a warranty and mot as the mot is expired . They said they would get it mot'd at point of sale and fix any problems found . As for the warranty they said is was "trade and sale " or some such. Possibly taken in trade in and maybe not the sort of car they usually sell s/h but I would have thought it would have had a short warranty at least .It has done 52000 miles Stuart
