Note also that your licence expires when you reach the age of 70, and must be renewed then. This could potentially mean renewing twice within a 12 month period.

Chris Whelan gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

Should've bothered reading the paperwork that came with the photocard, then.

Apart from the small detail that renewal of the actual _licence_ doesn't necessarily mean a new photocard, just as a new photocard has no impact on the renewal of the actual licence.

No, should have read up on what was involved in a photocard licence before getting one, and decide to stick with the old paper one if possible. As I have...

You could still have the inconvenience of making application to DVLA twice in a year however. Which wouldn't have been needed under the pre-photocard system.

DVLA will send people a reminder two months before the old photo expires. The date is also printed on the licence so there is no excuse really. It's a bit like saying you hadn't noticed a tax disc or MOT was expiring.

Driving a car these days requires a bit of responsibility and diligence on the part of the driver and I don't see keeping a licence up to date as any different to keeping tax and MOT up to date.

But then again the Daily Mail always did speak a load of b011ox. :-)

What a load of crap!!

I received a "Driving Licence Photo Renewal" form and notes on how to do it - just like you get a renewal notice for the car tax - a couple of days before I went on holiday. That was about the 14th August, I went on holiday on the 16th so didn't have time to do anything about it then, came back two days ago on 12th September and my photo licence expires on 29th September.

I don't like sideing with the guvmint, or agreeing with them on many things, but in this case I have to - 14th August to 29th September is quite a bit of notice that it needs to be renewed, so any motorist who "unwittingly" gets caught is a complete pillock in my view.
