FWIW there is a problem in general with the distinction between engineers and technicians. Engineers are designers and technicians are builders/fixers. Naturally either can overlap and you can get technicians that are as capable designing as the engineer. An engineer will have little experience of repairing something as they worked on the concept and designs and rely on feedback from technicians who do the hands-on work. Most engineers I know are happy to admit they cant
*make* the items as well as a technician with experience so its a strange argument.This upsets lots of technicians who like to think of themselves as engineers - god knows why, maybe they think 'technician' doesnt sound as good as 'engineer'. Its a common misconception of the term engineer. Even F1 teams have an engineering team and a technician team that work closely together but they dont all claim to be engineers as both are needed for the team to be competitive.
Either way, Ive seen experienced and qualified auto 'technicians' diagnose and fix things less well than my girlfriend (who has totally car-irrelevant qualifications) who just uses common sense.
