Dumped car

Sep 13, 2003 11 Replies

An Escort XR3i has appeared in the shared car park of the flats where I live-windows smashed radio ripped out G reg. I informed the police but they say it's on private land and not reported stolen so there's nothing they can do. The last owner lives in the area and the police said they would inform him/her 3 weeks ago. Of course he'd probably leave it for someone else to clean up and pay for.

Any recommendations to get rid of this? I'm tempted to push it out onto the road.

I think you will find its nothing to do with the police. Its the local council who get rid of dumped cars on the public highway.

The Police just put "POLICE AWARE" stickers on them...which just tells all and sundry it is abandoned - i.e. "Vandalise me!"

flats where I

police but

there's nothing

said they

leave it for

it out onto

the local

On private land that wouldn't apply. Contacting the owner of the car park might produce results. Mike.

That has been the general practice at our flats. Problem gone away..........

"Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978

Section 3 refers to abandoned vehicles

3 (1) "Where a vehicle is abandoned without lawful authority on any land in the open air .. it shall be the duty of the authority .... to remove the vehicle".

3 (2) "Where the land is occupied by any person the local authority shall to give notice. but will not be entitled to remove it if he objects."

3 (3) The Authority can refuse to remove the vehicle if the cost of its removal to the nearest convenient carriageway would be unreasonably high. "

So it looks to me that the car park owner can authorise the council to pick the car up.

It's been changed to "COUNCIL AWARE" locally.

I once had a ford grandada dumped across mine and my neighbours drive. The police were phoned twice ... but didn't come out.

So after a week struggling to get past it every time i used my car, i hitched it up one night and towed it ... to within 5 feet of the junction. (Illegally parked). It was removed the next day.

Its amazing how easily i granada left in gear with handbrake on can be moved .... all four wheels just seem to slide...............

Like the "Police Aware" sticker they put on a crashed car, in which a corpse was discovered 2 days later :-/

Pete.

Must have been something wrong with it then - I'd have expected the front wheels to roll quite easily on a Granada, being RWD and all...
