Engine Change?

The message from "Pete M" contains these words:

I was a driving instructor when they were released and I remember seeing a fair number of them in ditches all round the Watford/Hemel area. Drivers just didn't seem to have a clue how to handle them. I always put this down to them trying too hard to be like a car which made drivers drive them like cars - with predictable results. Then I drove one and decided that they were crap anyway.

The generally recommended maximum limit when towing a caravan or trailer is 85% of kerbside vehicle weight.

What they are saying is that it is illegal to tow more than the wieght of your car. However, it doesn't mean it is safe to do so.

From the RAC website:

"When towing larger trailers that have brakes fitted, the weight of the vehicle should not (as a rule of thumb) exceed 85% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle."

ITYM 'legal to tow'

So it's just a guideline then, most likely aimed at average cars most people own, which I guess aren't really designed with towing in mind.

Well you can always look at the owners handbook which includes the info.

Yes you could. According to the workshop manual for my 110 it is rated to tow 170% of the vehicle kerb weight.
