Well, I assume it's PAS, but maybe it's something else? 2003 1.4 Zetec has always made a strange noise, like a gasping, sucking noise, when reversing out of the drive (so a fair bit of lock on, but not full) first thing. I'm not sure if it shuts up after a few minutes, since I'm not usually listening to it at other times, and it can only be heard from the outside. We've lived with it for the last five years, but it sounds like it may be getting gradually louder, and a bit embarrasing :-) Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about it?
Fiesta PAS noise?

any fluid in it?
Sorry, I should have mentioned that. Every time I stick my head under the bonnet, I check the PAS fluid level (the noise being an ongoing preoccupation of mine). It's always good, and I've never needed to add any in all these years. The steering itself works fine, too. There's just this odd noise.
I have sometimes found that fluid pas can get air in the system while it stands, the air causes bubbles in the fluid and cavitation in the pump which gives noise, after a short drive the bubbles have all floated to the top of the system and the noise goes away. The giveaway is to start the car and move the steering a bit, then have a look in the top of the fluid container, if it is foamy on top then that may point to your problem as it should be just smooth oil. If it is all nice and smooth then it may be worth giving it a fluid change .
Thanks - I'll have a look as soon as I get a chance.
