Fiesta Zetec Over-revving

1997 Ford Fiesta 1.25 with Zetec Engine

My son has just returned from a couple of days away (including motorway journeys ) and says that on several occasions when pulling up to a road junction and putting engine into neutral, the car revs went up to 5k plus.

He reckons that he`s checked to see if the throttle cable etc was jammed , car mat sticking and anything else obvious but has found nothing .

We`ll be looking at it in the morning in the daylight but in the meantime does anyone have any experience of this problem or have any suggestions?

I`m hoping to find a sticking mechanical problem somewhere that will be cured with a drop of oil but is there anything electronic that might cause this fault?

Thanks

I'm not convinced. Presumably these engines still have conventional throttles? If so the TPS has an effect on the fuelling, and although of course if faulty this could alter the idle speed slightly I can't see how it could push it up to 5000 rpm. Unless, of course, it is combined with the ICV.

But I'm only guessing.

Yes I can see what you're getting at, I wasn't convinced it was the TPS on my escort, so I bought a cheap £5 one of ebay to try, which cured it. I think if the signal going to the ECU isn't right, it confuses the hell out of it, therefore opens the ICV all the way. 5,000 RPM sounds very high though, mine used to stick at 2,000 - 3,500 RPM.
