does anyone know where i can get a internal circuit diragram for a ford alternator (lucas type) as fitted to escorts in the early-mid 1990's. as i have one and would like to know how it works for a couple of projects i have in mind in partuclar the regulator part of the circuit.

A circuit diagram of the actual regulator won't help you much as you can't get inside them - they are in potting compound.

But you can get at the rest - all alternators are pretty much the same - the basic machine (stator and field windings) with rectifier pack and regulator and you can get at all the connections to these.

Circuits for older external regulators - using discrete components - are easy to come by and can be used with any car alternator.
