hi tim thanx so far.... Pressure appears a little high 3.8 bar...... hope you didnt ask that to be a little smug??

yes.
I don't know if that's high enough to upset things. See Tim's reply, above, and check what he suggests too.
Surely pressure at the rail should be less than the pump, due to the regulator bleeding fuel into the return? I don't know enough about injection systems to say for sure.
Does the fuel pressure reduce at idle and increase when the throttle opens? Thinking about it, I assume does it have a vacuum operated fuel pressure relief system? if so then pull off the vacuum pipe, blank it at the engine end and see what happens, if any fuel leaks out of the pipe then you have the culprit..
thanks for all your replys. not sure about the pressure change between idle/throttle. but will try what you suggested, i will let you know how it goes. the miss is more audible from the exhaust puffs and farts now and again at random there is no pattern to it. it almost sounds as if its running on 3 and a half cylinders. the engine doesnt look steady at idle....
just had a go....to no avail! its set up as follows : fuel pipe to fuel rail, theres a fuel pressure damper on the end of the rail with a small hose feeding back in to the inlet manifold (changed this and rail). a pipe from tank to the charcoal canister and from there to the inlet manifold via a valve. there isnt a fuel return pipe! I think there may be a problem with the ecu connector, a wiggle test seemed to change the idle speed (it got faster), a blip of throttle and idle returned to normal, still idling sh*t though. off to scrappie tomorrow, gonna cut one off a rover and get the soldering iron out!! No codes stored in the ecu though. I have got another ecu that i got with a job lot of parts, any ideas where i can get it recoded (birmingham area)?? I think its worth a try, depending on cost. Once sorted its being sold!! I dont want to pass on a car that has issues with it though!
Clamp the small hose from the fuel regulator, the idle should become worse. pull the pipe off, there should not be any fuel dripping from it, if there is then the diaphragm has failed.
the regulator in/at the fuel tank ??
the regulator is the bit on the fuel rail with a vacuum pipe to it
weve had the fuel rail out to day, cranked the engine to see injectors spraying. sh*t loads of fuel at pot 1 and vertually nothing on pot 4 fuel pipe blocked or fuel pump reg fault me thinks. swapped injector 1 for 4, still s*it loads on pot 1. diag shows all injectors firing for the same amount of time (0.3 sec). do you agree??
Sounds like an electrical issue. Any pressure fault would affect all 4 cylinders, and it would be very unlikely to be a blocked fuel rail, as it would take quite a substantial sized bit of dirt to block a single injector port. Although easy way to check, is to remove the injector from the suspect port and quickly turn the ignition on and check fuel comes out the rail port.
Is there enough slack in the injector wiring to try swapping the connectors between injectors (just between neighbouring pairs will do)? If there is, try that, and see if the fault moves to another injector. If it does, then it's time to split open the loom and check for any corroded wiring, and check any multiplugs between the ECU and injectors for any signs of corrosion. If the loom is hard to get to, then easiest thing to do is run a couple new wires from the ECU mutliplug, to the injector multiplug. If that cures the problem, you can either secure the new wires and leave it like that, or open up the original loom and find the fault (I alwasy prefer to open up the loom, incase theres any other wires affected)
as on pot 1
the other 3 injectors are firing, but no where near as much fuel as pot 1...
chunkybear via CarKB.com (u14753@uwe) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :
Swap no 1 injector with another one and see if the fault moves with the injector.
fault stays on 1, will try what moray sez about swapping cables around instead of injectors..
red herring!!! forgot to connect vac pipe on reg. all injectors spraying ok (my fault) ggrrrr!!! checked all wiring for continuity from source to ecu all checks out. i think its ecu checking time!!
