Getting past gritting lorries on motorways

What is meant to be the procedure when you are on a motorway and there is a gritting lorry in action ahead of you. I thought it was to stay well back, dont overtake it as it will leave at the next exit. I did this but it didnt leave at the next exit. Several other cars went past and just overtook it, which I eventually did. Getting a load of grit chucked at the car and windscreen at fairly high speeds is not ideal. Some people with cars a lot newer than mine obviously dont seem to care and just drove past it at high speed without hesitation, probably doing 70mph +

Probably a company car, rented or lease. IE not thiers.

I've always been told to stay well back behind them - if it's icy enough to use the gritting lorries then surely it's not going to be safe at 70mph anyway. Your taught (or supposed to be) when you have driving lessons to be aware of all conditions - other road users, weather, condition of tarmac etc and use your judgement.

These days the gritters are out well ahead ice conditions using the weather forecast. You might meet the gritters in the evening if ice is forecast during the night. I think councils are weary after last years traffic collapse around London.

They might be where you live. I haven't seen a gritting lorry round here this winter, despite several sub-zero nights.

Once inadvertently overtook a gritter on M40, uhh not recommended. Fortunately there was a clear lane between the gritter and my car and I didn't find any damage. But now I always look carefully at any odd type of lorry with a strange attachment.

Pull up behind the lorry flashing your headlamps and hooting your horn, then pull alongside still hooting, wave frantically at the driver, pull ahead and wait until they pull in and stop. Then get out and advise the driver that he is shedding his load!

They grit the roads before the ice or snow.

I assume you mean when the road seems clear i.e. it isn't covered in snow...

I simply don't bother - I'd rather keep well away and not get my car sandblasted.

Even though they come out normnally before ice starts to form, there's always a chance that you'll go whizzing past, straight into trouble!
