I'm guessing Y-reg = multiplexed? If so, a wiring diagram won't help much....

Dunno. I'm still in the 'wire goes from here to there via a switch and a fuse' age, as is my own car.

There is some urgency as she needs the car to get to work (Luton to WGC) and to transport the baby. One more car whose driver doesn't signal won't make much difference, I suppose. The aircon's another matter in this present heat.

There is a garage near me that might be able to fix it. Family business, not a VW franchise.

I don't see how that's wilfully misinterpreting your statement, or even misinterpreting it. You said the lack of indicators "won't make much difference", whilst the aircon is "another matter".

What _else_ could you mean?

I managed to speak to a relative this pm who works for VW Assist. He tells me that the two faults are very unlikely to be connected. (No pun intended).

The fault with the non-working indicators is virtually certain to be the hazard warning switch. (Yes, I know the hazards work!) This is a *very* common failure on both Golfs and Passats.

Yup, the indicators died on my old shape Passat - I pulled all the fuses and dug around looking for the relay..... only to find, when I got back home, that the relay was mounted on the back of the hazard switch.

Pull the switch, pull off the relay, clean up the connectors and put it all back together. It worked for me.

What I actually said was "One more car whose driver doesn't signal won't make much difference, I suppose".

The implication was that there are so many dopey drivers around who have no idea how to use their indicators (if they use them at all) that one more car that doesn't signal its intentions would be a drop in the ocean.

IMHO there are situations where indicators, while useful, are not 100% necessary if the driver positions the car intelligently and other drivers interpret said positioning correctly. OTOH the combination of these two events is extremely unlikely. Take any roundabout, any time of day. How many drivers pass two or more exits when in the left lane and signalling left? How many drivers pull out in front of you when you are signalling left for the following exit?

As to the aircon, she had no forced ventilation at all, so the only option would be to drive with the windows open, also not too effective in this heat (in sub-tropical Bedfordshire) and not good for the baby either.

Anyway, the problem turned out to be an under-dash relay whose innards had fried.

It was marked '100' in large characters. Access is from the side of the dash, by the door hinge. There is an identical relayin the case on the nearside at the back of the engine compartment, so they were swapped over.

I didn't do the job myself, so I can't really tell you much more about it. HTH.
