Home-made generator Pt2

Ok, I've been taking your opinions into consideration about the size of the engine being way to large. I've been researching information about smaller engines like the one detailed at:

I have a washing machine motor and an old lawnmower engine so I might give this a try. I'll have to think a lot more about it though to get the frequency and RPM correct and the capacitors etc.

I don't know if this may be of any interest, but I see that Makro are selling a 650W generator .."950 watt peak output".. for £59.99 plus Vat. Also on offer is a 2300W portable generator, the spec states.. "a quiet running engine and 10 hours running time on a tank of fuel".. for £199.99 plus Vat.

I don't think you'll get the result you want. Some years ago I mounted an old lawnmower engine to an alternator and mounted the whole lot onto a breakdown truck I had at the time for an auxiliary charger. It worked, just. At max engine speed the alternator was only just driven fast enough to put the charge light out. That was on a direct 1:1 drive.

Mind you, modern engines may run faster. The one I used was off a really old Webbs lawnmower. It was an interesting project though, and a conversation piece.

Have fun, but don't expect too much.

Remember if you are going to do this most car alternators take up to 3 HP to drive them and you would be better off using a pulley system to drive it so that you can get the drive from the engine to the alt. and this will also make it easy to make the gearing correct as the alt. will need to be running at about 2000 R/M to charge well. Trust this helps. Mike
