How Cold is Cold

I have recently had my air conditioning seen to and topped up with refrigerant gas. How should an efficient system perform in terms of temperature when measured with thermometer ? In other words should the temperature in a highly efficient system be 10 degrees C 12 degrees C or minus summit ? Car in question is a Vauxhall Vectra petrol engine 1.8LS

I was just in getting mine checked yesterday. They told me a system that's running really well will cool air to about 6 deg C.

To measure it you need to have one of those thermometers with a probe on it & stuff it into the dash vent, stick the thing on re-circ & the fan speed fairly low.

The standard way to measure is by putting a thermometer probe into the air vent. It should normally be around 7C on most average cars.

The ambient temperature in the cabin can vary depending on the system. It will also depend on the temperature of the dashboard, the outside air, and whether you're using recirculation or fresh air.

On an automatic system you will probably only get the cabin down to about 15C.

Normal figures for checking the aircon is working correctly, is if it lowers the temperature to 10 deg C below ambient temp, within a few minutes.

That's the correct answer. Davek.
