For those who remember this......both bulbs were dud :-)
FWIW just sold a nissan micra, 18 years old, owned from new, never had to replace a bulb in it.

Always pays to check the simple things :-)
Old bulbs are worth replacing, even when they are still working, because their brightness degrades with age.
